If you knap or wish you
could, give Donald Liscomb a call at 540.743.4007. Our home never has a day
gone by that is not deeply regretted if an arrowhead is not created. Donald
searches the world over for rock, wood, fur and feathers that the aboriginal
peoples used. He is a continual student of ancient toolmaking and carefully
applies the ancient skills to recreate the tools of our forefathers and mothers.
He has been teaching
these
skills for years and some of his students are now teaching others.
If you would like your
group to knap or make bows or just receive a demonstration lesson about the
ancient arts on the site of an old Indian village, just call The Country Place.
Whether you are a serious student of aboriginal arts or just enjoyed The Clan
of the Cave Bear or prehistoric studies, or are captivated by the Ice Man, come
spend your next weekend away at The Country Place.
Donald's
annual (sometimes twice a year) flintknapping weekends are one-of-a-kind events.
(They even hit the Shenandoah Valley news!) Annually,
flintknappers
from New Jersey to southern Virginia gather
for a weekend long prehistoric aboriginal arts retreat. Most are skilled aboriginal
toolmakers, well-versed in prehistoric studies. There are lessons and demonstrations
of primitive sports, bowmaking and archery, flintknapping of projectile points
(arrowheads and spears), basket making, scrimshaw, insight on relic hunting,
and other related subjects. Participants are always encouraged to share their
artistry.
The private camp is in the midst of the George Washington National Forest on the Shenandoah River. Established in 1984, it is built in primitive style on an old Indian village site. Donald Liscomb has been interested in museum and archaeological studies of primitive peoples all his life. Those interested in learning more or sharing their knowledge about primitive arts are invited to attend part or all of the flintknapping weekend long activities. Participants bring food to share and tents with bunkbeds are provided.
